On an Alive in Roswell evening, Canton Street is active with vendors, music, and pedestrians. By 5 p.m. the vendors are setting up tents between Gate City Brewing and the Roswell Antique and Interiors Lot, a band is doing a sound check somewhere near Elizabeth Way, and the street itself closes to cars from Highway 9 to Norcross Street so a few thousand people can walk it instead. It's the third Thursday of the month, which means it's an Alive in Roswell night, and if you didn't already know that Riverside Park has been sitting behind construction fencing since February, you would have no reason to notice its absence.
Riverside Park's renovation changed the local events calendar. Alive in Roswell continues on Thursdays, and Music on the Hill takes place on Fridays. Riverside Sounds' former Saturday schedule is paused during construction.
The Park That Went Quiet
Riverside Park closed at dusk on February 1, 2026, the start of a $13.8 million renovation funded by the 2022 Recreation & Parks Bond that Roswell voters approved. The city council awarded the construction contract to MAPP that December, broke ground on March 13, and set a target reopening of summer 2027. The scope is real: a new events pavilion, upgraded restrooms, expanded parking, a nature based playground, and a redesigned sprayground concept, though the existing sprayground itself stays closed the whole time. For a 21 acre park that pulled more than 130,000 visits a year, that's not a small stretch of downtime.
The bigger loss was Riverside Sounds, the free concert series that had run on the fourth Saturday of the month for 25 years. Its final season before construction told you the ending was already planned. Instead of the usual six dates, the city scheduled four, running April through July of 2025, and the opening show with the alt country band Town Mountain reportedly pulled more than 800 people onto the lawn. That's the kind of crowd a Saturday night in Roswell used to draw without anyone thinking twice about it.
Friday Night at City Hall
Friday live music takes place on the lawn behind Roswell City Hall at 38 Hill Street. Music on the Hill runs the second Friday of the month from May through September, 7 to 9 p.m., and this year's lineup leaned into the city's America250 programming with an all 80s theme. Dock Rock Radio opened the season in May, a Piano Man versus Rocket Man tribute show played in July, and Nashville Nation closed things out in September. Bring your own blanket, your own cooler, your own food. Beer, wine, and sangria are sold on site courtesy of sponsors that include Gate City Brewing Company and Top Job Beverage and Events.
Riverside Sounds was held at Riverside Park along the Chattahoochee, a different setting from the City Hall lawn.
Thursday Never Blinked
Alive in Roswell has kept its full April through October schedule this year, third Thursday evening, 5 to 9 p.m., split across two venues: Historic Canton Street and the Roswell Antique and Interiors Lot at Canton and Webb. The September date was September 17; October 15 closes out the season. Gate City Brewing is the presenting sponsor, which tracks with how central the brewery has become to that stretch of Canton Street since it opened as Roswell's first brewery at the corner of Canton and Magnolia. What used to be two mechanic shops is now a 30 barrel brewhouse and 3,000 square foot taproom with up to 20 beers on draft.
Gate City's cocktail addition, the Artillery Room, sits inside a building with a longer history than the brewery itself. The address was once part of a Ford dealership compound before becoming a gun and tackle shop in the 1970s, a business that operated until a 1984 fire, one of the worst in the city's history, that put a Roswell firefighter in danger because of ammunition stored inside. The exposed brick you see there now was uncovered during the renovation.
Canton Street's Thursday night crowd has other places to land before or after the festival tents close:
- Variant Brewing Company, a few blocks off Canton, running four year round beers alongside rotating seasonal releases
- From the Earth Brewing Company, the first brewpub to open in Roswell, built around locally sourced food alongside its own beer
- Loyal Tavern, which solved a problem downtown didn't quite know it had by becoming the street's actual sports bar, with enough screens to watch a full slate of games
- Table & Main, the Southern tavern known for fried chicken that earned a 2024 Michelin Bib Gourmand
- Bizarre Coffee, which opened its third and largest location in February 2026 at 1090 Alpharetta Street, a 3,500 square foot flagship for a brand that started in Canton and Woodstock
None of that reads like a downtown compensating for a closed park. It reads like a downtown that already had enough gravity of its own.
Riverside Sounds' Saturday Schedule
Riverside Sounds was held on Saturdays, while Alive in Roswell takes place on Thursdays and Music on the Hill on Fridays. The current calendar lists no fourth-Saturday concert in Roswell. Whether Riverside Sounds returns to that schedule has not been announced.
The pause applies to Riverside Sounds; it does not extend to the city's Thursday and Friday events.
What's Actually on the Calendar Before Thanksgiving
The next two months compress a lot into a short window:
- Saturday, October 3: the 76th annual Youth Day Celebration on Historic Canton Street, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the Frances McGahee Parade, Art Block, Fall Farm Days, Touch-A-Truck, and Food Truck Alley
- Thursday, October 15: the final Alive in Roswell of the season
- Thanksgiving week: Running of the Turkeys down Canton Street, benefiting Friends of Roswell Police
Together, those dates carry Roswell's public calendar from October into Thanksgiving week.
When the Park Reopens
The target reopening is summer 2027, with a redesigned park built around more open sight lines to the river, a new pavilion, expanded parking, and 86 additional trees planned as part of the redesign, even as the project removes 221 trees currently on site for safety, invasive species, or construction footprint reasons. Whether Riverside Sounds returns to its old Saturday slot on the same schedule hasn't been announced yet. For now, the fourth Saturday of the month in Roswell is simply open.
